Filmmaker Ava DuVernay explores the history of racial inequality in the United States, focusing on the fact that the nation's prisons are disproportionately filled with African-Americans. Discussion after film regarding the politics of mass incarceration and Black criminalization.

"FAIR LEGISLATION: The Byron Rumford Story"

Location: The Regis Bldg - 1100 11th St., 3rd Flr., Sacramento

The compelling one-hour film produced and directed by filmmaker Doug Harris, closely examines Northern California’s first Black assemblyman, William Byron Rumford, who served in the legislature from 1948 to 1966. Film includes a dynamic cast (E. Dotson Wilson, James Sweeney, Elihu Harris) that will help viewers relive the social and political climate of Byron Rumford’s pivotal years in office in Sacramento and the most important legislation passed by Byron Rumford during his long tenure as an assemblyman:  the Rumford Fair Housing Act of 1963.

The Sacramento Chapter of the Black American Political Association of California (BAPAC) is hosting the 39th annual convention for the BAPAC organization!

The State Convention will be held Friday and Saturday,

October 20-21, 2017 at the Holiday Inn in Sacramento, CA.  Rory Kaufman, President of BAPAC Sacramento, states, "We are humbled and honored to coordinate this historic event

in the State's Capitol City of Sacramento. It is of extreme importance to allow African Americans and other ethnic groups to join together to ensure the voice of the people are heard in this political era. This convention will provide knowledge that will educate, engage, and most importantly, empower our attendees to be informed about the political processes that occur and to become enlightened regarding

the upcoming 2018 election."

The theme for the convention is: "BAPAC...Making an Impact...2018." The convention is comprised of a plethora of informative workshops, VIP receptions, a gala dinner with a prominent key-note speaker, the highly anticipated Hall of Fame awards, a Night at the Apollo for fun and laughter, and much more.  Honorary Chairs include The Honorable Anthony Rendon (Speaker of the California State Assembly), The Honorable Chris Holden (Member, California State Assembly/Chair, California Legislative Black Caucus) and other Members of the Legislature and elected officals.
